In the world of aesthetic surgery, the most successful procedure is often the one no one notices. This is particularly true for Asian Eyelid Surgery (Double Eyelid Surgery). For many of our patients in Toronto, the goal isn’t to change their ethnic identity or look “Westernized”—it is to create a more defined, refreshed, and symmetrical version of their own eyes.

At the Eye Face Institute, we believe that a “natural” result is rooted in a deep understanding of unique eyelid anatomy. Here is how we approach this delicate procedure to ensure results that harmonize with your face.

Understanding the Anatomy of the Crease

The Asian eyelid is distinct. Anatomically, the attachment of the levator muscle (the muscle that lifts the eyelid) often sits lower or is absent, resulting in a “monolid” or a “hooded” appearance.

Achieving a natural look depends on choosing the right crease shape for your facial structure. There are generally two styles:

    1. The Tapered Crease: This fold starts narrower at the inner corner of the eye and gradually widens. It is often considered the most “natural” looking for many Asian facial types as it follows the eye’s organic curve.
    2. The Parallel Crease: This fold runs parallel to the lash line and does not meet the inner corner. This often creates a more “glamorous” or “open” look, ideal for those who wear more eye makeup.

    Customization Over “Cookie-Cutter” Results

During your consultation at the Eye Face Institute, we don’t just look at the eyelid; we look at the whole face. Factors like skin thickness, the amount of orbital fat, and the presence of an epicanthal fold (the skin covering the inner corner of the eye) dictate which surgical technique we use.

    • The Incisional Method: Best for patients with thicker skin or excess fat. It allows for permanent, high-definition results and the removal of “puffiness.”
    • The Suture (Non-Incisional) Method: Ideal for younger patients with thinner skin who want a quicker recovery and a very subtle enhancement.

The Eye Face Institute Philosophy: Less is More

One of the biggest misconceptions about eyelid surgery in Toronto is that “more” is better. In reality, removing too much fat or skin can lead to a hollowed-out, aged appearance. Our surgeons focus on preservation. By meticulously repositioning tissue rather than simply discarding it, we maintain the youthful fullness that is characteristic of a vibrant eye.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    1. How long does the swelling last after Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Most patients experience the peak of swelling within the first 3 to 5 days. By the end of the second week, about 70-80% of the swelling typically subsides, allowing you to return to social activities. However, the “final” refined crease shape may take 3 to 6 months to fully settle.

    2. Is Double Eyelid Surgery permanent?

The Incisional Method is considered a permanent procedure because it physically attaches the skin to the underlying muscle. The Suture (Non-Incisional) Method is less invasive but has a small chance of the crease fading or “dropping” over several years, especially if the patient has thicker eyelid skin.

    3. Will there be visible scarring?

At Eye Face Institute, we take pride in our “invisible” technique. For the incisional method, the scar is meticulously placed within the new eyelid fold. Once healed, the scar is hidden when the eyes are open and appears as a faint, natural-looking line when the eyes are closed.

    4. Can I get eyelid surgery if I wear contact lenses?

Yes! However, you will need to switch to glasses for approximately 2 weeks following the procedure to avoid tugging on the incision site while the tissue is healing.

    5. Is the procedure painful?

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is. We typically perform the surgery under local anesthesia with sedation, meaning you are relaxed and feel no pain. Post-operative discomfort is usually managed easily with standard over-the-counter pain relief.
